What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone where a tooth is missing. Once the bone has healed around it, a custom-made crown is attached to the post. Implants can replace a single tooth or support a bridge or denture.
Is an implant right for you?
Not everyone is suited to implants. Your bone density, gum health, general health and habits such as smoking all affect whether an implant is an option. At your consultation we’ll talk through:
- whether an implant is suitable for you
- other options, such as a bridge or a denture
- the expected number of visits and healing time
- a written estimate of costs before you decide
What to expect
- Consultation and planning: examination, x-rays and a discussion of your options and costs.
- Implant placement: the post is placed under local anaesthetic.
- Healing: usually a few months while the bone bonds to the implant.
- Crown: a custom crown is fitted to the implant.
- Ongoing care: regular check-ups and good home care help look after your implant and the teeth around it.
Risks
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Possible risks of dental implants include infection, swelling, bleeding, nerve injury and the implant not bonding with the bone. Results vary from person to person. Before proceeding, you may wish to seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner. We’ll explain the risks that apply to you at your consultation.
Cost and payment options
The cost depends on your situation, including how many teeth are being replaced and whether extra procedures are needed. You’ll receive a written estimate after your consultation. Payment options are available; ask our team for details. If you have extras cover, you may be able to claim part of the cost, depending on your fund and level of cover.

Frequently asked questions
How long do dental implants last?
It varies. How long an implant lasts depends on your general and oral health, your home care, and attending regular check-ups. We’ll discuss what to expect in your situation at your consultation.
Does getting an implant hurt?
The implant is placed under local anaesthetic. Some tenderness and swelling afterwards is common, and we’ll give you aftercare advice.
How long does the whole process take?
Usually several months from placement to the final crown, because the bone needs time to heal around the implant. Your plan will give an estimated timeline.
Who will treat me?
Dr Anjana Ramroop, a general dentist. If your case needs a specialist, we’ll refer you.
